Volunteer Commitment:
Last year, following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, many pro bono attorneys assisted at legal clinics throughout the city assisting Haitians in the United States with applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a legal status that allowed them to remain and work in the United States.
On May 17, 2011, the Department of Homeland Security announced an extension and re-designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals. Those with TPS have until August 22, 2011 to renew their status. Significantly, however, TPS is now available to those who arrived in the US up to a year after the earthquake. These individuals have until November 15, 2011 to apply. With this extension and expansion of TPS, there is once again a great need for pro bono assistance to help with TPS applications.
This course is FREE to those who agree to volunteer for a minimum of two three-hour clinic sessions with the Haitian Immigration Legal Assistance Program (HILAP) or Lutheran Social Services of New York. Experienced attorneys receive additional MCLE credit for every 6 hours of eligible pro bono service.
