Assisting Veterans with Student Loan Debt

Topics:
  • Military / Veterans
  • Consumer
Low income veterans are often burdened with federal student loan debt that they are unable to repay because they have been victimized by predatory for-profit educational institutions and by sham trade schools that promise an education and/or job placement. When this educational debt cannot be repaid, veterans are subject to harassment by debt collectors and their wages and tax refunds are garnished; while older veterans are divested of their social security earnings. This CLE will describe the various federal programs targeted at veterans with student loan debt and will cover strategies for negotiating manageable repayment plans with the Department of Education and options for discharging educational debt.
