Rosie's Place was founded in 1974 as the first women's shelter in the United States. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment that helps poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives.

In service to the mission of Rosie's Place, the Legal Program provides compassionate, easily-accessible legal information and advice to all women seeking assistance with and answers to their legal questions. Many people with little or no income are forced to be involved with the courts to address critical issues. Most of those people will have to navigate the complicated court process alone. The Legal Program at Rosie’s Place strives to help women in this situation be in the best possible position to represent themselves.

We are currently seeking help for our in person, drop-in General Advice and Referral Clinic, which happens every Thursday, 1:00-3:00PM at Rosie’s Place. This clinic serves three main purposes:

  1. help guests determine if the problem they are experiencing is actually a legal problem,
  2. identify any legal rights they may have and offer information about how to assert those rights, and
  3. meaningfully connect them with any existing legal resources for further assistance.

Guests come to this clinic with questions on anything from evictions to child custody to
finding stolen artwork! If you enjoy meeting really interesting people and creative
problem solving, you will love this volunteer opportunity.
