Her Justice serves New York City women living in poverty with high-stakes legal needs. They provide pro bono legal assistance for low-income women who are often victims/survivors of domestic violence with (1) divorce cases -- litigated and uncontested; (2) Family Court cases -- child/spousal support, custody/visitation, orders of protection; (3) immigration cases -- Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) self-petitions and Battered Spouse Waivers. Her Justice provides training in the substantive and procedural issues raised in the cases referred to its volunteer attorneys from corporate law firms. In addition, Her Justice assigns mentors with expertise in matrimonial and family law and other related areas of law to law firm volunteers participating in its program, and informs its volunteers of helpful legal and community resources. Volunteers are needed for various projects including: volunteers to conduct telephone intakes, in-house volunteer attorneys, interpretation for client meetings and court appearances, translation of materials and legal documents, and volunteering at various events throughout the year. Volunteers who speak Spanish or other foreign languages are frequently needed.
