New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a not-for-profit law firm founded in 1976, provides a broad range of pro bono experiences to thousands of attorneys through our Pro Bono Clearinghouse. NYLPI's Pro Bono Clearinghouse matches hundreds of community-based organizations and non-profits working on behalf of underserved neighborhoods with attorneys qualified to meet their legal needs. Every year NYLPI works with over 100 firms and corporate law departments to undertake a broad range of pro bono projects that assist the poor, strengthen communities and attack systemic problems.
Assistance is provided in three areas: (1) Protecting the Disadvantaged (Litigation); (2) Building Communities & Institutions (Transactional); and (3) Partnership Projects. In addition to the opportunities presented by the clearinghouse, attorneys can pursue more tailored pro bono matters by working with NYLPI's in-house staff. NYLPI's in-house legal team does substantive legal work in the areas of disability law, environmental justice and access to health care on behalf of low-income individuals. The Disability Rights Task Force offers peer support to volunteer lawyers working on disability rights cases.
