WSBA Call to Duty

The WSBA Call to Duty initiative is designed to inform, inspire, and involve volunteer attorneys in meeting the legal needs of veterans. We share information and resources to equip our members in serving veterans. Whether it's through one of our new Days of Service opportunities or through one of the many great volunteer opportunities around our State, members take the Pledge and commit to serving Washington veterans.

The Pledge
The WSBA Call to Duty asks our members to take a Pledge to serve veterans. We will guide and support pledges through a year of opportunities to build community through service. This support includes highlighting both legal and non-legal resources for veterans, providing education and CLEs, and the chance to answer the various calls to duty in serving veterans. Members can sign up for the pledge, at any time throughout the year.

The pledge reads:
I pledge to serve veterans this year in one or more of the following ways:
• Use my legal skills to advise a nonprofit organization that serves veterans
• Mentor those who take pro bono cases that served a veteran
• Teach at a CLE on veterans legal issues
• Volunteer for one of the Call to Duty's Days of Service or with the WA Vets Will Clinic
• Take a low-fee veterans' case through the WSBA Moderate Means Program
• Take a pro bono case from an organization who service veterans
• Become certified to take a VA benefits case

  • Training / Supervision Comments: This initiative will include two annual Days of Service – one each spring and fall, and one each on the East and West sides of the State. The Days of Service are based on a service learning models. Each day will include three parts: (1) a morning CLE seminar on an identified high priority civil legal need and cultural competency serving the veteran’s population; (2) a hands-on legal clinic experience in which lawyers provide legal advice pro bono to veterans; and (3) a reception and meet-and-greet with the selected organization to connect lawyers furhter with more opportunities to continue serving veterans. For 2014, we have two clinic scheduled. Check back to see when registration opens.
