Lawyers are trained to give their all to their work - mind, body, and soul. This mindset is introduced in law school and is reinforced throughout an attorney’s career. The pressure of the billable hour, striving to be a high performer, and managing people and teams add to the continued high-paced and stressful life of a lawyer. And so, it is not difficult to understand that working within this environment tends to be in direct conflict with creating a “work-life balance.”
It is common for lawyers to sacrifice their physical and mental health, and well-being to prioritize getting the work done and advancing their careers. This work environment has contributed to the findings in several studies that people in the legal profession experience high levels of depression, substance abuse, and in some cases, self-harm.
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated many of these issues. However, there are strategies that attorneys can implement and practice to increase coping skills and create a healthier mental outlook. There is also a need to destigmatize seeking professional help and creating resources to support the mental health of legal professionals.
Topics to be addressed include:
- What stops many attorneys from asking for help with mental health challenges (15 minutes)
- Let’s reframe mental health in the workplace (15 minutes)
- How to destigmatize mental health in law firms and legal departments (15 minutes)
- Practices and strategies for increasing wellness and self-care (15 minutes)
In recognition of Lawyer Well-Being Week 2023, this presentation is being offered at no-charge to attendees.
