Join us to hear about the debt collection issues the Federal Trade Commission has been seeing.  These issues include phantom debt, unlawful collection threats, credit reporting issues, and other misrepresentations regarding the nature of the debt.

FTC staff will talk about recent cases involving violations of the FTC Act (federal unfair/deceptive acts/practices statute), the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), and the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).  Staff will also discuss how to spot violations of the FDCPA and other unfair/deceptive practices, recent trends in consumer complaints, and consumer resources on what to do if a consumer doesn’t recognize a debt and how to protect against debt collection scams.

This will be a great introduction for those new to these issues, and a valuable update for attendees who may already be more knowledgeable on debt collection issues, and interested in learning about the FTC’s recent work.

Speakers:

Dan Dwyer, Attorney, Division of Financial Practices, Federal Trade Commission

Ari Lazarus, Consumer Education Specialist, Division of Consumer and Business Education, Federal Trade Commission
