Senior Attorney - RiseBoro Community Partnership

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Director, the Senior Attorney will ensure that the underserved low-income residents in Brooklyn receive high-quality, free legal services and assistance designed to preserve safe and affordable housing, and prevent needless homelessness by representing tenants facing illegal or unnecessary evictions, displacement, and tenant harassment. With more experience in the field, the Senior Attorney will also participate in the training and mentorship of junior attorneys in order to continue advancing the quality of LEAP services. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide in-court mentoring to junior staff attorneys
  • Facilitate/lead staff-wide roundtable training meetings and discussions
  • Maintain accurate case, file, and tracking information related to individual caseloads
  • Prepare legal pleadings, stipulations, motions, and other legal documents
  • Provide client advocacy with social service organizations, governmental agencies, and other third parties to obtain needed services, and benefits, as necessary
  • Conduct independent research, interpret, and apply legal principles of the most complex nature within the assigned work area
  • Identify applicable updated laws, cases, rules, procedures, policies, and practices relating to the housing field
  • Assist in the training of junior attorneys and other LEAP staff as needed
  • Contribute to the guidance and oversight of volunteers and legal student interns
  • Coordinate and participate in community outreach events, tenant rights workshops/clinics, and brief advice services
  • Participate in strategic planning, program assessment, special projects and initiatives, and other organizational work as needed
  • Ensure staffing needs are met as needed in the WeWork office
  • Other responsibilities as assigned to help develop, maintain, and execute LEAP's vision/mission
  • A minimum of three (3) years of legal experience, with a minimum of 1 year of experience in housing court required
  • Ability to analyze complex issues and exercise sound legal judgment

  • EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

Juris Doctor degree and Admission to New York State Bar
SALARY RANGE

$110,000.00 - $115,000.00 Salary/year
