Bronx Legal Services seeks experienced housing attorneys to join its supervisory team.
About Us
Bronx Legal Services seeks experienced housing attorneys to join the supervisory team for our expanding eviction prevention and anti-displacement housing practice, which focuses on supporting Bronx communities facing rapid gentrification. Bronx Legal Services is the largest provider of free civil legal services in the borough, and is part of Legal Services NYC's network of local programs throughout New York City. Bronx Legal Services' mission is to advance society's promise to the most vulnerable members that they are entitled to equal access to our legal system.
Responsibilities:
We are looking for candidates who are excited to work in a fast-paced environment and to use creative strategies in the pursuit of justice. Responsibilities include directly supervising the practice of several housing staff attorneys in the full range of housing matters handled by the unit and maintaining a small caseload. The supervising attorneys will work closely with the Housing Unit Deputy Directors and co-supervisors to shape the direction of the Housing Unit, develop and strengthen relationships with partner community organizations, handle administrative and grant responsibilities and identify systemic housing-related trends that could be affected by strategic litigation. Supervising attorneys will oversee a committed team of attorneys and staff representing low-income and elderly Bronx residents and will be expected to work closely with tenant organizers, tenant associations and community partners to identify and address housing needs. They will be expected to oversee and conduct weekday, evening, and weekend outreach and off-site intake with our partners.
Experience and Qualifications:
The supervising attorneys will support the work of attorneys and staff, and the day-to-day functioning of the housing unit. The supervisors must be able to juggle a fast-paced practice and support litigation and advocacy on a range of issues, coordinate building-wide and community-based litigation, and organize community education outreach and related initiatives. Candidates are expected to supervise regular appearances in civil, supreme, and federal court and administrative proceedings, review draft pleadings, motions, and court submissions, and support the filing of affirmative cases on behalf of tenants and tenant groups.
Additionally, the ideal candidates will display a demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to working with low-income communities and communities of color; excellent analytical and writing skills; experience with housing issues and advocacy; and enthusiasm for partnering with community-based advocates and organizations. Proficiency in a second language spoken by members of our client communities (primarily Spanish) is preferred.
