Why You Should Attend
Whether you work in the legal services, nonprofit, law firm, or corporate setting, if you are working with pro bono clients, it is critical to incorporate trauma-informed lawyering into your practice. Many pro bono clients have experienced some form of trauma, and understanding how trauma impacts client-attorney interactions can help you build effective attorney-client relationships.
This program will address how trauma can manifest itself in client relations as well as best practices you can use to build trust and help your client. The program will also address vicarious trauma, a risk for any attorney, social worker, supervisor, paralegal, caregiver, or anyone else who works with survivors of trauma.
What You Will Learn
After completing this program, participants will be better able to:
- Understand how manifestations of trauma can affect client interactions
- Identify best practices for building trust and for ongoing client communications
- Recognize vicarious or secondary trauma and focus on wellness and resilience for service providers
Who Should Attend
This program is designed for attorneys and allied professionals who work with pro bono, low-income, disadvantaged, and/or trauma-impacted clients. The program will benefit both new and experienced practitioners.
PLI offers full scholarships, registration fee waivers, and discounts to attend PLI programs for attorneys, paralegals, law librarians, and staff working for nonprofit/legal services organizations; pro bono attorneys/volunteers (providing no-fee legal assistance to clients individually or through a nonprofit organization); government attorneys; judges and judicial law clerks; law professors and law students; retired attorneys; independent/freelance paralegals; unemployed attorneys; and others with financial hardships.
