Ethical Implications of Bots Practicing Law

The advancement of AI, ChatGPT, and other legal technology platforms can help lawyers be more efficient and more accessible to those seeking answers to questions “after hours.” Technology can also offer innovative offer innovative ways to address access to justice issues in the courts. While offering forms of legal services to those who may not otherwise be able to afford or access them, these applications continue to raise unauthorized practice of law (UPL) concerns and other ethics issues for lawyers who create and work with them. Mindful of the need to protect the public while not stifling access, UPL regulators also sometimes struggle with where to draw the line. This panel of experts will provide examples of different technology enabled legal service delivery models and discuss the ethics issues lawyers should consider when developing or utilizing them.

Topics to be addressed include:

  • Ethical challenges faced by designers/builders (20 minutes)
  • Need for regulatory clarity and uniformity (20 minutes)
