Elder abuse, which can be physical or emotional abuse, neglect, or exploitation, is often a silent problem that affects 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60. It is often committed by a caretaker or family member where there is an expectation of trust. Approximately 60% of elder abuse and neglect incidents are perpetrated by a family member. (NCOA.org) This abuse robs older adults of their safety, dignity and security, especially their financial security.
