Training program for experienced CLARO volunteers or NYS attorneys with litigation experience to volunteer through CLARO Programs. CLARO Programs provide limited-scope legal services to unrepresented people on consumer debt collection matters. No prior experience required. Volunteer attorneys must have viewed or attended Track I to attend Track II.

Fordham Law School's Feerick Center for Social Justice operates four CLARO Programs in New York City: the Remote CLARO Program, Bronx CLARO, Manhattan CLARO, and Staten Island CLARO. Other partner organizations operate Brooklyn CLARO, Queens CLARO, and Westchester CLARO. The Feerick Center's CLARO training programs make qualifying attendees eligible to volunteer in all CLARO Programs.

CLARO Programs involve collaborations among bar associations, academic institutions, the courts, and legal services organizations. Volunteer attorneys provide limited-scope legal services to unrepresented defendants in consumer debt collection actions (filed almost exclusively in New York City Civil Court). Consumer law experts provide supervision and support; volunteer law students work alongside volunteer lawyers. This is a wonderful pro bono opportunity with a flexible time commitment.

Experienced CLARO volunteers and attorneys with litigation experience who attended the Track I Training are eligible to attend the Track II Training. The Feerick Center is seeking volunteer attorneys with litigation experience to assist with both discovery-related assignments (i.e., responding to Notices to Admit and Interrogatories) as well as preparing and responding to motions.

CLARO clients benefit tremendously from the legal information, legal advice, and litigation document preparation the CLARO Programs provide. For more information, please email feerickcenter@fordham.edu.

  • CLE Credit Comments: Volunteers can earn 3 CLE CREDITS (1.5 Professional Practice, 1.5 Skills). Appropriate for both newly admitted and experienced attorneys. Topics Include: (1) Motions for Summary Judgment in the CLARO Context - Legal Standard, Procedural Requirements, Common Issues with Consumer Debt Collection Cases, Best Practices for Counseling CLARO Clients, and Debt Buyer and Original Creditor Cases; (2) Motions to Dismiss; (3) Motions to Renew and Reargue; and (4) Motions to Compel.
