In this fourth program in the Presidential Series, Raising the Bar of Hope, which highlights issues concerning Black women, our distinguished panel will discuss the incarceration and post-release challenges faced by Black women. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, the female incarcerated population in state prisons has increased 900% since 1978--more than doubling the pace of growth among men. Women are more likely to be incarcerated in local jails than state prisons, and the majority of women held in local jails are incarcerated pending trial. These numbers become much more stark when accounting for race: Black women are markedly overrepresented in prisons and jails, comprising almost one-third of the incarcerated population. The panel for this event includes community advocates and subject matter experts who will discuss Black female incarceration overall; challenges faced by Black women and girls while incarcerated and post-release; the collateral consequences of incarceration; and proposed post-release program and community reentry solutions.
