Troubled Apartment Complex to Undergo Full Inspection; Residents Want City to Step In

"CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A troubled west Charlotte apartment complex will undergo a full inspection from city of Charlotte code enforcement, beginning Wednesday, Aug. 29.

Lake Arbor Apartments has been the subject of a month-long investigation by FOX 46 Charlotte.

Lake Arbor has had 111 complaints to code enforcement since Jan. 1, 2017. Of those 111, 59 are still open and 11 of them are heading to environmental court where the property manager is facing misdemeanor charges for failure to repair the dwelling.

"Assess every building or every unit on the property," one resident said at a meeting this weekend.
FOX 46 has reported on many issues across the complex that are not being forwarded to code enforcement because some tenants fear retaliation from property management.

Some past residents claim they were either evicted or kicked out for reporting violations.

"When you peel the onion back, this is what you see, the real Charlotte," one community organizer said.

Dozens of residents and community members gathered at the Tuckaseegee Recreation Center on Saturday to discuss their issues with Charlotte's Community Relations Committee.

Representatives from code enforcement and city council member LaWana Mayfield were also in attendance.

Together, they reviewed resident's concerns, gave them information on contacting code enforcement, informed them of tenant's right and introduced them to someone with Legal Aid.

Mecklenburg County Commissioner Vilma Leake was also in attendance.
