Description-ACLU of Maryland Pro Bono Program
Virtually all of the ACLU's research and litigation involves attorneys who donate their time on behalf of civil liberties. Our Legal Panel consists of several hundred potential volunteer lawyers who research and litigate the vast majority of cases on the ACLU's docket, speak to religious and community groups, testify before legislative committees, and serve as informal legal consultants to ACLU staff.
Our cases involve interesting and often novel questions of constitutional or civil rights law. In most cases, our clients are ordinary people who would be unable to retain private counsel because of the scope or notoriety of their case, or simply because they lack the resources to hire a lawyer.
Legal Panel attorneys are under no obligation to accept a matter presented by the ACLU. They may have a conflict, or an impending trial, or simply inadequate resources to take on a particular case. Those who do serve as pro bono co-counsel with experienced ACLU staff attorneys.
