Expungement Clinic

With the Expungement Summit, you will have the opportunity to represent indigent clients in sealing their DC criminal records.

DC LSIC will pre-screen the clients. We will analyze your clients record to determine which charges or convictions are eligible for sealing pursuant to D.C. Code 16-801 et seq. We will submit the names of potential clients to your firm to conduct a conflicts check. You will meet your client(s) at the Summit and will interview him/her to gather the facts needed to tell your clients story to the court. Upon meeting and signing retainer agreements, you will then draft and submit a sealing motion to the court and track it from filing to disposition. This process should take no more than one hour on the day of the Clinic/Summit. There is no obligation to take a case as there are many pro bono opportunities available on the day of the clinic

In exceptionally rare circumstances, the Judge may order a hearing on the motion. You will need to attend the hearing and offer oral argument on your clients behalf. We offer training and moot support for any pro bono attorney faced with such a hearing upon request. The total time commitment should be no more than four to five hours.

TRAINING

Prior to your taking an expungement case, the experienced expungement attorneys at LSIC can will come directly to your firm and provide a 2-hour training to teach you everything that you need to know about expunging a criminal record. Alternatively, we can provide you with training on the day of the Summit.
LSIC will also give you access to a resource bank that contains expungement materials and sample motions. The attorneys at LSIC will be available to provide as much guidance as you may need throughout your Expungement case.

We hope to welcome you to the LSIC family and share the rewards of pro bono service.
