Best Practices in Pro Bono: A Deeper Dive into Self-Care

Our January Best Practices in Pro Bono session on Self-Care was outstanding, but we have more to discuss! In January, we explored the reasons that pro bono cases can cause coordinators and volunteers to struggle: when our clients face significant challenges, we often feel their pain. Juggling the stress of unexpected court deadlines, client emergencies, secondary trauma related to client challenges, and the burdens of never being able to do enough can take a serious toll on your health. We were able to begin the discussion of how to ensure you and your volunteers have the resources you need to be well, even when challenges arise.

On February, 20, our panelists will return for a deeper dive into this important topic. They will discuss the warning signs of when you or a pro bono volunteer needs support, and what resources are available in our community to assist lawyers who are struggling with stress, depression, substance abuse, or secondary trauma.

Our January panelists will be back for further discussion: Kim Daulton (Director of Social Work, Children's Law Center); Denise Perme (D.C. Bar Lawyer Assistance Program); and Dr. George Wheeler (a psychologist who holds office hours at Hogan Lovells), and the panel will be moderated by Paul Lee, pro bono counsel at Dechert.

If you missed our January Best Practices session, you have a second chance to learn about this important topic. And, if you attended our January Best Practices session, this is your chance to deepen your understanding, explore resources, and learn more! Light refreshments will be provided.
