Last year, over 850 petitions were filed by consumers in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Columbia. A significant portion of those were pro se petitions filed by low-income and working-poor individuals... the very ones who could most benefit from counsel.
The Bankruptcy Practice Area of probono.net/dc guides and supports volunteer attorneys to represent low-income and working-poor individuals from their initial interviews through to their final discharges; including preparation of their Chapter 7 petitions, defense or preparation of any adversarial matters, preparation and attendance at the 341 Meeting of Creditors, and post-discharge counseling.
