Campbell Law Pro Bono Council is partnering with the North Carolina Pro Bono Resource Center to perform Driver License Restoration Survey Assistance.

Volunteer for the Driver's License Restoration Project

When:

Training: Tues., Oct. 18 from 12-1 in room 309 at Campbell Law

Project: After attending or viewing the training, complete the project remotely by Friday, Oct. 28. Pro Bono Council will be hosting a call center day where you can come eat, hang out, and complete your call list. This will be during National Pro Bono Week, on Tuesday Oct. 25 from 12-1 in room 416.

Background:

Under North Carolina law, a person who misses traffic court or is unable to pay traffic court fines and fees is subject to an indefinite suspension of his or her driver's license, regardless of whether it is the person's first ticket or first time missing court.

These suspensions have dire consequences for drivers and their families, particularly for North Carolinians who are already economically vulnerable and those who live in rural areas without reliable public transportation.

The NC Pro Bono Resource Center (PBRC), a program of the Equal Access to Justice Commission, teaches NC drivers, without access to an attorney, how to restore their driver's licenses with individually tailored advice letters.

The Role of the Volunteer:

The PBRC seeks law student volunteers to conduct survey calls to clients who have received an advice letter. Volunteers will conduct an interview with each assigned client and determine whether the client has received their letter and has taken steps to restore their license. If the client has not restored their license, the volunteer will determine what, if any, legal and economic barriers exist and in what area the client could use extra assistance from an attorney.

Volunteer Requirements:

Must have a laptop with internet access.
Must have access to a phone and be willing to set up a Google Voice number for anonymous calling.
Must attend the live training session or watch a recording of the training and review all training materials.
The PBRC will:

Train volunteers.
Provide an interview script and detailed questionnaire.
Be available to answer any questions during the course of the project.
