The CLE features two presenters who are both attorneys and veterans and who will address how to provide effective representation to veterans, whether in civil or criminal matters. Representation of veterans presents a unique set of concerns for attorneys, particularly those who have not served themselves, and most critical is an understanding of familiarity substantive and cultural fundamentals, particularly when representation involves navigating the complex web of benefits intended to help low-income and justice-involved veterans. The session will provide an analytic framework to understand who is a “veteran” under the law, what rights and benefits attach to that status, key issue identification, and cultural practices for attorneys serving veterans in a system where goodwill has not always yielded good outcomes.

The program will be introduced by ABA President-Elect Linda Klein and moderated by the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Assistance for Military Personnel (LAMP) counsel.
