This training will provide an overview of the legal issues facing LGBTQ veterans. Now that Don't Ask Don't Tell has ended, lesbian, gay, and bisexual people (but not transgender people) are allowed to serve openly in the military. However, there are still many veterans who were discharged for being gay in the past who continue to suffer adverse effects in their current lives. A discharge for being gay might create problems in employment and housing, or might result in the veteran not receiving all the veterans benefits to which they are entitled. We will discuss the process for discharge upgrades as it relates to LGB veterans. We will also discuss issues specific to transgender veterans: specifically, the process for changing discharge paperwork for transgender veterans whose military discharge paperwork does not match their current name, and the current Veterans Health Administration policies and rules for health care for transgender veterans.
