Why You Should Attend

There are over 42,000 homeowner associations (HOAs) in California alone. An estimated 8.6 million California homeowners are members. It seems likely that this number will increase substantially in the coming years. There are extensive legal requirements governing how an HOA may operate with respect to its treatment of individual homeowners, yet many homeowners find that those laws are not being followed, and HOAs do not always get the legal advice that they need in order to operate correctly or address other problems the HOA may be having as a whole.

Attend this training for an overview of key issues and legal concerns from both HOA and homeowner advocates - for HOAs as governing bodies and for information that can help you assist individual homeowners facing the possibility of foreclosure or experiencing fair housing problems at the hands of their HOA. The attorney trainers will provide an overview of the relevant rules and regulations governing these issues and discuss how to identify and address HOA problems for homeowner members and the HOA as a body.

What You Will Learn

  • Legal structure governing HOAs
  • Issues that can lead to foreclosure (such as normal monthly dues, special assessments)
  • Laws governing foreclosure by an HOA
  • Addressing construction defects
  • Interplay between debt collection laws and HOA responsibilities
  • Fair housing and HOAs (issues such as religion and accessibility)

Who Should Attend

Practitioners who represent homeowners and homeowner associations will benefit from this program, as will general practitioners interested in learning more about the nitty gritty of how HOAs are structured and regulated.
