Pennsylvania SeniorLAW HelpLine, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Bar Association and Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network, Inc., will be sponsoring a volunteer attorney training on July 13, 2012 entitled, "Pro Bono From Your Desk" "Providing Legal Services Through the Pennsylvania SeniorLAW HelpLine: An Introduction for Volunteer Attorneys."
The program will be held at Arcadia University, 7th Floor, 1150 First Avenue, King of Prussia, PA 19406, on Friday, July 13, 2012 from 11:00 AM - 1:00 p.m. Eastern.
Description of Program
This course will train attorneys to provide legal counseling through the Pennsylvania SeniorLAW Helpline. A project of SeniorLAW Center in Philadelphia, the HelpLine is a toll-free telephone service offering free, confidential legal advice, information and referrals to senior citizens statewide. SeniorLAW Center is a nonprofit organization which improves the lives of older Pennsylvanians and protects their rights through representation, education and advocacy.
The course will focus on the logistics of handling HelpLine cases and the most common areas of law about which callers seek information. In addition, since most callers to the Helpline are lower-income, the course will include a primer on poverty law (such as public benefits). The ethics component of the course will cover the professional responsibility requirements of both pro bono service and limited representation. Services can be provided from the privacy of a volunteer's office or any private location.
Course materials will arm attorneys with the resources to provide legal advice and information, as well as quality referrals, on a variety of topics. Materials will be provided on compact disc, to allow participants quick access to a myriad of resources while handling HelpLine calls.
