The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) will present a Domestic Violence Prevention Training for new volunteers at its Courthouse Domestic Violence Clinic on Saturday, June 9, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 Fourth Street, Santa Monica. Metered parking is available beneath the Ken Edwards Center so bring quarters. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. Bagels, coffee and a manual will be provided.
Volunteer law students assist victims of domestic violence to receive Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs) against their abusers. LAFLA staff attorneys and volunteers also assist many of the clients with their other family law issues stemming from the abusive relationship. Volunteer law students must attend the training and commit to volunteering at one morning clinic each week through the semester. The clinic is open from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., but volunteers are expected to stay until all registered clients are seen, occasionally as late as 1:30 p.m. Parking at the courthouse is free for volunteers.
Attorney volunteers must commit to one morning a month for at least 6 months at the domestic violence clinic at the Santa Monica Courthouse. The clinic is open from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., but volunteers are expected to stay until all registered clients are seen. To those who would like to attend the training, but not volunteer, the cost is $100, but other arrangements may be worked out for non-profits.
To register for the training, please contact Clara Reyes at (323) 801-7969 or creyes@lafla.org.
Space may be limited.
