Probono.net/asylum presents a webinar featuring an attorney from Human Right First which will focus on pro bono representation of asylum-seekers in the United States. Asylum-seekers are at risk of persecution or torture in their home countries because of who they are-because of their religion, political opinion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity, for example-and they have fled to the U.S. for safety, often arriving here with nothing. There is no right to government-funded counsel in immigration cases, so there is a real need for pro bono representation in these cases. During this webinar, you will learn about some of the key issues in asylum law, and will get an introduction to representing asylum-seekers before the Asylum Offices and the Immigration Courts. You will also learn about the bars to asylum and will gain insight into how best to work with survivors of torture. This session will also help volunteer attorneys and prospective volunteer attorneys learn about where to find resources to support their pro bono asylum work.
