With the signing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in March 2010, access to affordable and effective health care changed dramatically for low-income people nationwide. Legal aid programs face thousands of potential new applicants for service on health-related matters and join clients in the critical need to understand the changes made by the law and how these changes are being implemented state by state.

The National Health Law Training, co-sponsored by the National Health Law Program and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, will provide an overview of key provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and their impact on low-income people and will guide participants in new advocacy challenges resulting from ACA for the legal services community. It will also highlight the serious impact of state fiscal crises on the implementation of the new law and variation of state approaches. Shriver Center advocates are organizing panels for the training, and Shriver Center President John Bouman will be presenting.

Legal services offices can expand their ability to serve the increasing needs of low-income clients as health law changes are coming. Sessions will provide legal services attorneys with critical information on the ACA, defending Medicaid, and other health law matters.

Special registration rates apply during the month of May. Moreover, a limited number of scholarships are available for legal services lawyers, public defenders, and other public interest lawyers.
