The Domestic Violence Advocacy Program (DVAP) is a program of the Louisville Legal Aid Society which provides free legal representation for victims of domestic violence in Jefferson County, Kentucky Family Court in obtaining protective orders against perpetrators. This program, entitled "Helping Victims of Domestic Violence in Family Court", will teach attorneys the Nuts and Bolts of representing victims of domestic violence in Domestic Violence Order (DVO) hearings and in a basic divorce cases. Statutory and case law will be reviewed with an eye toward providing practitioners the "fundamentals" needed to handle these cases. The Dynamics of Domestic Violence will be reviewed to provide a deeper understanding of the forces at play when an abuser inflicts violence upon his/her domestic partner.
This training will serve as a primer for Volunteer Attorneys who handle DVO dockets for the Legal Aid's Domestic Violence Advocacy Program (DVAP) or simple divorce cases for Legal Aid Clients. Louisville Bar Association members can attend this seminar FREE of charge by agreeing to represent TWO Legal Aid clients, pro bono, in their domestic relations matters.
