This intensive one-day training will cover the immigration consequences of criminal arrests and convictions for people applying for adjustment, an immigrant visa, naturalization, or relief from removal. The training will describe how to obtain and decipher criminal records, how to determine if there is a conviction, and outline strategies for dealing with criminal issues. The criminal grounds of inadmissibility and deportability will be described, along with available waivers. Impact of crimes on relief from removal will be covered. Relief from removal and practice tips on representing juveniles in proceedings will also be discussed. Case files and exercises will be used to analyze sample crimes issues. The recent case law changing the categorical approach for crimes of moral turpitude and aggravated felonies will also be covered.

The training will be presented by Attorneys who are expert practitioners in this area of immigration law, and who are experienced teachers on these subjects. Lecturers include Immigration Judge Anthony Rogers, and Attorneys Lisa Schwamkrug, Lynn Olinger, Elizabeth Cedillo-Pereira, Amy Hsu, Tricia Freshwater and Peggy Gleason.

The training is for the staff of Catholic Charities and other community-based organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) status, and attorneys and legal staff of private law offices.
