CLARO (or the Civil Legal Assistance Resource Office) provides limited, legal advice to unrepresented debtor-defendants in New York City Civil Court. Programs operate in New York, Queens, and Kings Counties. The Bronx CLARO Program is scheduled to launch July 2009. Volunteer lawyers provide legal advice on consumer debt collection, which frequently involve credit card cases. Filings of such cases have exploded in recent years, reaching nearly 300,000 in 2008. The vast majority of debtor-defendants are unrepresented. CLARO Programs involve collaborations among local bar associations and law schools. The Bronx CLARO Program is a partnership with the Bronx County Bar Assocation, the New York City Bar Civil Court Committee, the Feerick Center for Social Justice at Fordham Law School and area law student volunteers.

Weekly clinics are scheduled to operate in Bronx Supreme Court on Thursday afternoons, from 4pm to 6pm.

  • CLE Credit Comments: Volunteers will receive 3 New York CLE (non-transitional, professional practice) credits for attending the three-hour training contingent on their performing 6 hours of pro bono service (i.e., 3 two-hour CLARO sessions). Unless you have previously signed up with a pre-existing CLARO Program (for example, through NYCLA, the Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyer Project, or the Queens County Bar Association), the volunteer sessions will take place in Bronx Supreme Court.
